Meet the Sweetheart Girls, Shawna

Shawna, SHE girl, SHE team, Wedding Planner, Sweetheart Shawna, Vancouver Wedding Planner

Hello! I’m Shawna, an Associate Planner at Sweetheart Events! In addition to being a wedding planner, I’m a lover of coffee dates, candles and flowers. I’m known for making checklists, over packing for all situations and always having my nails done. Most days you can find me drinking coffee, working on my couch with my pug battling my computer to get on my lap.

My journey to wedding planning:

Growing up I was always a planner and involved with the organizing of school events, fundraisers and birthday parties.  I went to College in Calgary to study Public Relations and one of my courses was Event Planning and I thought: “wow, this is what I’m supposed to be doing!” and decided to make a career of it.

I moved back to Vancouver and attended BCIT for Event Marketing and although I originally thought I would stay on the PR side and do corporate events, I fell in love with the idea of getting to celebrate one of the most important days in someone’s life every day.  I continued my education through the Wedding Planner’s Institute of Canada and became a Certified Wedding Planner and officially joined the wedding world!

Your favourite part of the wedding day:

I can’t pick just one… but I love seeing the ceremony and reception space all come together! We spend months planning every single detail, so it’s pretty amazing to see that vision come to life. Sending my brides (and grooms) down the aisle will always be the most important and special part of the day. A fun and energetic grand entrance with their bridal party is also a highlight for me.  The music is pumping and you can tell the nerves are gone and everyone is just ready to celebrate! I love it and I get goosebumps every time.

We’d be a great fit if:

I gravitate towards the asethetics of your wedding day but I love the story behind the detail. That’s what gives me the good goosebumps! I’m all about creating romantic, intimate settings filled with beautiful blooms. I love working in the outdoors as well as four walls that I can truly build from the ground up with the couple. If we are outdoors, I will always have that gorgeous rain plan in my back pocket! Also if you’re a lover of Pinterest and have a pug baby yourself, we’ve just become bffs!

My typical Sunday:

When I’m not working hard to make your day the best it can be I enjoy exploring my neighbourhood with our dog/daughter Ella.  My favourite weekend getaway destination is going home to visit my family on the Sunshine Coast. I love spending time on the deck with my family and watching the stars at night – you can’t see the stars like that in the city!

My Love Story:

When I moved to Vancouver I started my first job in the big city and that’s where I met Fred.  We became friends after his Uncle (also a co-worker) insisted that Fred drives me home one night after work.  Not long after that night, we started dating and this June we celebrate our twelve-year anniversary!

Favourite beverage:

Coffee! I have it every single morning. I’m a much better person with coffee.

Meet the Sweetheart Girls, Beth

Wedding Planner, Beth Barr, Vancouver Planner, Vancouver Calligrapher

Hey! I’m Beth and I’m thrilled you’re considering me for your special celebration and want to learn more!

 My Journey to Wedding Planning:

Unlike others, I never thought I would work in weddings. I thought I would head into a corporate job and have a creative side project that would keep me inspired and busy. It wasn’t until I was asked by a friend to help his fiance plan their wedding that I would fall in love with the process and decide that this was it for me.

I reached out to Stephanie and had coffee with her one afternoon and immediately I knew I had found a group of girls that shared my passion for weddings and who support and encourage me every day.

My Favourite Part of the Wedding Day:

There are a few moments that are truly very special to me –  so it is really hard to just name one! So, here are two reasons why I love being a part of your wedding day. I love being a part of the creative direction in helping create a story that comes alive through the details of your wedding. Watching all those elements like colours, decor and especially the florals come together is the absolute best.

I also love watching families and friends come together to celebrate. I love watching the interactions and hearing the conversations between the guests. Witnessing and sharing in a couple’s love story is an honour I don’t take likely.

We’d be a great fit if:

I love the couples who want to not just plan a wedding – but wants to create a celebration for their guests that is different and unique. Couples who have fun with their plans and are open to doing something maybe not so traditional, and something that will wow their guests while still staying true to who they are. I am in love with the aesthetics that make up the details of your day, and I love the couples who also value that and want to create a beautiful environment for their guests. And finally, I love the couples that make it a priority to plan not just a wedding but plan for the marriage that follows the next day.

Describe your Typical Sunday:

On any given Sunday you’ll find me relaxing and catching up with family and friends, who to be honest I don’t see quite often in wedding season! Talking over brunch and endless cups of coffee before spending the afternoon without a plan – which is something that as a planner, I really look forward to each week!

Favourite Beverage:

Isn’t it quite obvious? I start my day always with hot water and lemon, but survive the day with simple black coffee (usually with some dark chocolate paired with it.)

What Inspires You:

Like many others, I find inspiration in so many different aspects of life and nature. I love spending time surrounding myself with new people and hearing them tell stories, submersing myself in new cities and places and seeing the world from a new perspective. I also love spending time outdoors, surrounded by elements of nature and seeing how they can play a part in your wedding day.

My advice to you:

My advice to you would be to have fun and to really narrow down your wedding priorities early in the process. To really listen to your gut and to plan a celebration that you will look back on years down the road and know that you still wouldn’t change a thing. But seriously, have fun – this is a brief stage in your life and you are only engaged once, so enjoy it!

West Coast Marriage Proposal- Daralan & Brandy

Daralan and Brandy met on an online dating app back in 2015. From the very beginning the spark was there. Although they lived provinces apart, they never went long without seeing each other. After many travel adventures shared, Daralan knew she wanted to propose to Brandy on her next trip out to Vancouver. She contacted the SHE team to collaborate and execute a true west coast marriage proposal that would completely surprise Brandy.

For our proposal location, we chose the Sea to Sky Gondola because of the couple’s love for the outdoors. On Daralan’s trip out to Vancouver she surprised Brandy with a weekend away to Whistler. Together they love spontaneous adventures together. That morning, on their way up to Whistler, Daralan pulled into the gondola’s parking lot to surprise Brandy with gondola tickets. The gondola was a bucket list item they always wanted to do. Although the weather wasn’t ideal, the tickets were non-refundable (or so Brandy thought). They embraced the rain and cold temperatures and headed up the mountain on the private gondola. At the top waiting for them was a moment that Brandy could never have imagined happening that day.

As they entered the room they saw a wood shingled wall filled with photos, memories and love notes of their favourite moments together. Around the corner were wood and gold brass lanterns, candles and a wood sign with the words Will you marry me painted in white calligraphy. Daralan took Brandy’s hand, got down on one knee and asked those four little words. Brandy said yes and they were engaged!

Following the proposal, the photographer and couple explored the gondola for a mini engagement session. With the weather conditions the couple had the entire area to themselves allowing us to get some great images.

When they returned, a table for two was waiting for them with wine and beer, a Say Yes Dirty Apron wine bottle and engaegment announcement christmas ornament for their tree (a yearly tradition the couple do together). The couple sat for hours smiling and reflecting on that moment they just shared. It was an incredible moment to be invited into their lives to create something so personalized and intimate for them. Later that evening, another surprise was waiting for Brandy at Araxi Restaurant. At their table waiting for them was an arrangement of tulips (her favourite flower) and a love letter keepsake of what Daralan had said to her earlier that day when she proposed.

The wedding plans are underway and I am thrilled to take this beuatiful couple from Before the Yes to I DO next year!

How they met: (from the Bride)

Megan and Simon met through a mutual friend, Dafydd. While Simon and Daf met at the University of Calgary. Megan and Daf met later in life through her sister who attended the University of Victoria with Daf. Megan and Daf connected through their love of music and eventually became roommates at the University of Leicester in the UK for two years where they both studied law.
After law school, Megan and Daf moved back to Canada. One fateful evening, Daf invited Megan to a friend’s birthday and introduced Simon and Megan. Cue instant sparks – Simon and Megan spent most of the night chatting and discovered they had a lot in common. At the end of the evening, Simon realized the connection quickly and made the move to ask for Megan’s number. (Go Simon!) Megan was not even home yet when Simon sent the first text – “it was wonderful meeting you and I hope you made it home safely.” Simple, charismatic, caring, and to the point. Megan also realized shortly she had found a match.
Several weeks and many fun dates later, the connection progressed quickly. They both realized how special this relationship was when Megan hopped on a flight to visit Kora, the maid of honor, in Calgary. Megan and Simon spoke almost every day while Megan was away. When Megan returned to Vancouver, Simon was anxiously waiting at the airport with the perfect date night planned. Hint and spoiler alert for the proposal: Spectacular Dinner + Fabulous Spa + Amazing Company = Winning Date Night to Megan’s Heart.

How He Asked: (From the Bride)

Shortly into their relationship, Megan and Simon both knew they were going to be married. After a Saturday afternoon “browsing” at rings, it was only a matter of time when Simon was going to pop the question.
On October 11, 2013, Simon planned their usual trip to Whistler for their 3-year anniversary. Megan was undoubtedly thinking it might happen but Simon made sure he threw her off (Kudos for successfully misdirecting the lawyer, Simon!). Simon slyly noted that he “forgot” to pack a dress shirt, and even changed dinner plans the first evening when Megan asked without hesitation.
The next morning, Megan and Simon went to their favourite spa, Scandinave Spa. After a romantic couples massage and run back to the changing room to “get something”, Simon led Megan to the lower hot tub. Unsuspectingly, Megan turned to hang up her towel and turned back around to see Simon take ahold of her hands and go down on one knee. “Will you marry me?” Simon said. Overwhelmed with emotion and excitement, Megan replied “Yes, yes, I will marry you.” Cheers soon erupted from the balcony where Simon’s sister, Emily-anne, and her fiancé (now husband), Travis, were. They drove up to Whistler in a torrential downpour to simply capture this special moment and celebrate with Megan and Simon!

How they wed:

It was February 20th, 2016. The day began with mimosas and hair and makeup services for the girls in navy floral matching robes while the men were downstairs for a hot shave. The first look was held on the rooftop garden, overlooking the city. Simon, waiting ever so patiently for Megan to arrive, slowly turned around. He smiled from ear to ear when he saw Megan for the first time. After sharing a few moments alone, the wedding party joined for photos.

As guests entered the club, they walked upstairs and through the corridor to the University Room. Musicians were playing soft classic favourites as guests found their seats. The mantle was displayed with heirloom glass candlesticks that represented an individual story and favourite past time in their families. Simon and his groomsmen made their way to the aisle and all guests stood for Megan and her father’s arrival. It was there, how evident the love these two share for each other. The ceremony was filled with stories, personal vows and a few humour bits thanks to our fabulous officiant. The couple kissed and made it official.

Immediately following the ceremony, guests were welcomed into the Georgian Room for canapes, cocktails and music before the dinner reception. The room was filled with cream, gold and navy with a kings table for the couple and their wedding party. The emcee was the best I’ve ever worked with. She continously had the crowd in a roaring laughter throughout the night. The guests enjoyed a plated multi course dinner before the couple shared their first dance.

Wishing this couple an incredible anniversary today and a lifetime of happiness with many adventures ahead. Lots of love!

Goal Digger | 17 of 2017

goal digger, girl boss, vancity blogger, sweetheart events, vancouver wedding planner, setting goals

I’m a goal digger and so pumped for 2017! While I always prepare myself for goal setting at the beginning of each year, my Power Sheets sadly collect dust instead. They just sit there until I tuck that binder away and hope I’ll do it next year. This year was going to be different. I scheduled time, opened my binder and grabbed my mint green pencil and began writing.

This Goal Digger’s 17 of 2017:

Business Goals:

* Create an Email List– I’ve been following girl boss, Jenna Kutcher, for some time and she’s coaching me on a 5 day Build Your Email List course this week. I truly love what I do and although I’m not expecting a 1000 followers but I want to share more about why I do what I do, share planning freebies and share upcoming projects. I want to share these goodies with you! Will you sign up? Stay tuned!

* Say No– I am too much of a sweetheart and I tend to say yes to everything until I am curled up in a ball, tears streaming down my face because I am so overwhelmed and burned out. Yep, that’s truth friends! This year, I am saying no to things that may not direct me to my target couples, take up too much of my creative time or something I just can’t give my whole heart to. I’ve said no already and deep down it felt so good.

*Blogging– I started blogging consistently last year once a week and I am excited to continue doing this. I want to hear from you. What do you want to hear? With my email list I will be able to share freebies. Planning a wedding is not easy so any assistance I can offer I would love to be welcomed into your life and share my experiences.

*Attend a Workshop– Rhianna from Hey Gorgeous Events offers the Trouvaille Workshop every year and it’s been on my wish list every since she first launched the idea back in 2013. I may not attend this specific workshop but I love the opportunity to learn from other creative entrepreuners. Any recommendations?

*Step Outside of my Comfort Zone– Well this is something I do on a regular basis but I would love to take it one step further. Perhaps that’s speaking to a group of women wanting to chase their dreams of starting a small business? Maybe that’s taking on a huge client and creating something I have never done before. Putting it out in the universe and seeing what happens.

*Refresh– My website design is amazing and Tammy from Uniquity Designs killed it but it’s time for a refresh. This may not happen until late 2017 but I want to work towards creating something new and exciting.

*Get Featured– Last year my collaboration for Rocky Mountain Bride brought a huge smile on my face. I would love to see another couple’s love story in print. I would love to see my work on the pages of Style Me Pretty, Once Wed, Green Wedding Shoes & How He Asked again.

*Community Over Competition– I love the idea of The Rising Tide Society and would love to create a morning coffee date once a month with like minded creatives to brainstorm and cheer each other on! Are you in? I would love to find 5 women to team up with.

*Expand Proposal Planning Services– I want to add to the overall experience I already provide along with still being cost effective and convenient. When I first started my blog I began with a proposal story series. I may bring this back. I would love to share your love stories!

*Delegate and Outsource– This might be the most difficult goal this year for me. I personally think of myself as superwoman and try to tackle too much. I have realized my strengths and weaknesses. Instead of trying to tackle everything I will delegate that tasks that I might not be good at. Bonus points for me for hiring a book keeper this year (my books were a mess)!

*Start an Online Shop– Because everyone loves shopping! My girl, Beth, is a uber talented with calligraphy and I would love to showcase some of our most popular quotes and wedding signs. Would love to mail those proposal boxes all over the world! Does anyone have experience with this? Please help!

Personal Goals:

* Hit Pause and Vacay– I’ve always wanted to explore Europe or sit on the beach and just drink margaritas. Last year I escaped to Montreal with my sister. This year, I would love to schedule a week with the bf and take off…Perhaps on his harley this time 😉

*Read More– Embarrasing fact but I can’t remember the last book I read cover to cover. Actually it may be Lord of the Flies and that’s because it was a high school project. I start books but never pick them back up. Let’s see if I can change this. Any recommendations?

*Educate myself on Food & Wine– I would love to take cooking classes or wine classes to learn more and educate myself. Team meeting with the wine sommelier?! Ladies, you in?

*A Healthier Me– It’s super cliche but I want to make me at 30 the healthiest I have ever been. My sister is training as a Hollistic Nutritionist and is already helping me rock this goal. I also joined Class Pass and am trying to work out 3 times a week. Are you a member? I would love a workout buddy!

*Date nights with the BF– Love creating cost effective date night challenges with the bf and want to continue this in the new year once a week. We all lead busy lives and require reminders to hit pause on the work and focus on our relationships. Plus date nights are a blast!

*Disengage from Social Media– My last and final goal of the year. I was hanging out with friends and found myself disengaged and scrolling through Instagram. I looked up and realized that all of us were on our phones and no one was interacting with one another. This is the year for setting boundaries. How do you do this?

Now you may have scrolled all the way down but if you didn’t I would love to hear your 17 of 2017 and cheer you on! Comment below or email me a quick hello.

Wishing you an incredible and successful year!
